Lessing wins 2007 Nobel for literature

The Golden Notebook must be much more interesting in the Swedish translation. Or, the Swedes totally love ‘mah man done me wrong‘ tales. I certainly have a few of those. Give me a Nobel Prize.

    Maybe they gave it to her because she probably decided to stay alive as many years as it took to get it, and they figured that if they gave it to her she’d finally die.

    One can only hope. I feel sorry for the generation that might have been spared her turgid prose due to historical amnesia. This reminder is surely going to arouse a few sadistic teachers and professors who will start assigning The Golden Notebook again.

    To think that Muriel Spark, who was truly worthy of a Nobel, is dead (and thus ineligible) and Doris Lessing isn’t.
